To salute auto show season, here’s a look back at a major milestone in Jeep production. On August 27, 1987, the number of Jeeps produced reached 5 million as a Cherokee rolled off the line in Toledo. Blade photographer Bruce Sinner was on hand for the event. Shown from left to right: Lloyd Mahaffey, International Rep. UAW Region 2B, Dan Twiss, unit chairman of UAW Local 12, Jim Korowin, Chrysler plant manager, and Jerry Huber, production manager. Production of the 5 million Jeeps spanned parts of five decades, from 1941 to 1987. The total included 361,407 military Willys MAs plus more than 4.6 million bearing the Jeep name starting with the Civilian Jeep (CJ) 2a model in 1946, and including CJ models built in Brampton, Ontario. AM General and Ford-built Jeep-type vehicles were not counted in the totals. The North American International Auto Show opens to the public at Cobo Center in Detroit Saturday and runs through Jan. 22. The Greater Toledo Auto Show opens to the public at SeaGate Convention Centre on Jan. 26 and runs through Jan. 29.
