VLT-wrestlingCreative-y

Creative youngsters use their imaginations, and sometimes their backyards, to make their own fun and get exercise. At the Mario Klingel residence on Wyndale Road, there was a wrestling ring, and room for spectators’ chairs. Neighborhood youngsters arranged their own wrestling matches, and played before a fair number of spectators. They even sold soft drinks, usually to other neighborhood kids who came to watch. Blade photographer Bruce Sinner spotted this wrestling match Aug. 21, 1949, and saw 12-year-old Larry Merrick score a fall over 13-year-old Roger Clawson. Serving as referee, on left, was 11-year-old Dave Klingel. Young Klingel was lucky enough to live at the address where the wrestling ring was located. The other two boys lived on the same street.
