As anyone who has moved knows, it works best if you move things one piece at a time. In this scan of a Blade archive photo taken by photographer Don Simmons, a helicopter hoists half of the landmark Owens-Illinois sign from its old headquarters in downtown Toledo on May 19, 1979. The Owens half of the sign was the first to be moved. The dismantling operation took more than an hour. The sign had been part of the downtown Toledo skyline since 1955, and was flown to the nearby Middlegrounds for temporary storage. Parts of the logo were to be taken to Owens Technical College to serve as a symbol for that institution. The proposal for a new Owens-Illinois Inc. headquarters and redevelopment of the northern half of downtown Toledo became public in July of 1977. The project led to the birth of SeaGate Centre off Summit Street, along the Maumee River. Working closely with city of Toledo officials, Owens-Illinois announced its plans for a new headquarters at a cost of a minimum of $50 million. The new headquarters, at One SeaGate, opened in 1981. On May 5, 2005, O-I announced it would leave downtown and relocate all of its local employees to an office park site it owned in Perrysburg. The 32-floor office tower in Toledo is now occupied by Fifth Third Bank.
