President Trump is on a mission to get every Arab and Muslim country to recognize the state of Israel. Whereas most Arab countries have already recognized Israel, there are some who have made such recognition conditional upon resolving the Palestinian issue. Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are among those countries.

Ohio’s public universities have made big improvements in their policies on free expression and intellectual diversity, in most cases thanks to the recently passed Senate Bill 1. This law requires all public universities to take several important actions, from adopting new statements on free expression and policies of institutional neutrality, to ending the use of DEI statements in hiring, to promoting intellectual diversity in faculty hiring. These moves signal Ohio’s serious commitment to free expression and diversity of thought.

I have two sayings I believe in: “Don’t serve me crumbs and call it a steak dinner” and “Food is a human right.” Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., went down the street to the child center to give them $30,000 for their garden. He smiled for the people and for the camera, and he felt that he did a good thing. But down the street is a wonderful farm, Urban Wholistics, that not only grows fruit and vegetables but confidence in people who work there. So, while the federal government tosses a pittance back to us, the state government continues to cut funding for large-scale food projects like Urban Wholistics.

In his article asking whether Shia Muslims want to annihilate Israel, Dr. S. Amjad Hussain makes an important clarification: classical Twelver Shia theology does not contain a doctrinal command to destroy Israel or Jews. That is correct. Most Shia Muslims are not driven by apocalyptic political theology, and it is unfair to reduce a diverse tradition to its most extreme interpretations.

I appreciated a recent reader’s facetious suggestion that our road repairs could be fully funded if local and state police officers ticketed speeders on our streets and highways. I am likely the only other driver in Lucas County who sets his adaptive cruise control (a tremendous safety device, by the way) at the posted speed limit, while the rest of the world races by. The reader failed to mention the added cost that would be realized if all those speeders on their handheld devices paid that fine as well.

DO YOU have grandchildren? If so, you can feel my distress. Nothing against grandchildren. I love mine with all my heart. But imagine the scene. You’re visiting the kids at their house. It’s the middle of the night. You head to the bathroom in the dark. Suddenly you feel a pain in your foot so severe, so piercing, that it should only be experienced by a condemned man walking to the gallows.

North Toledo residents will often tell you they feel forgotten. They feel overlooked, disenfranchised, and disconnected from the systems that are supposed to serve them. Many have lost trust in government and organizations after years of feeling ignored.

Republican Derek Merrin has President Trump’s “complete and total endorsement” in the 9th congressional district rematch with incumbent Democrat Marcy Kaptur. But if he wins, Mr. Merrin will not serve northwest Ohio well unless his first and foremost allegiance is to voters here and the issues that assist them.
