Thomas Wiles -

Thomas Wiles
Thomas "Tom" Joseph Wiles, 83, passed away on June 24, 2026, at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, NJ, surrounded by his immediate family. Born February 4, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, he attended St. Charles Preparatory School and the Ohio State University while earning his pilot's license (PPL, IR, CSEL, CMEL) at Lane Aviation. Later, moving on, he enjoyed fight instructing while attending law school at the University of Toledo.
In 1966 he worked for a small Aviation FBO (Fix Base Operator) called National Flight Services (NFS). Founded in 1960, NFS was located on National Airport, a small airfield north of Toledo focusing on basic FBO services. NFS relocated to the Toledo Express Airport in 1969 after National Airport closed.
Tom's entrepreneurial journey began in 1972 when he acquired the NFS FBO on the Toledo Express Airport. He envisioned the potential for broadening NFS capabilities into an innovative Aviation Service Center enhancing services by catering to the needs of aviation users and providing job opportunities.
NFS expanded which included fuel sales, aircraft sales, charter, maintenance (primarily of Beechcraft and Twin Commander aircraft), Airframe repairs, inspections, part sales, refurbishing parts, TPE331 engine repair overhaul and modification, custom interior installations meeting the needs of aircraft operators - private, regional, corporate, airline, and government.
NFS opened satellite shops separate from NFS headquarters in Toledo. These shops, operated by NFS, were designed to extend the company's reach for current and future roles closer to clients and to develop talent pools - a structured collection of potential candidates with skills, experience and interest to fill NFS roles, ensuring a ready supply of talent and maintenance. Satellite shop locations included: Glendale, AZ; San Antonio, TX; Kansas City, Missouri (Propulsion Controls); Mississauga, Canada (Ontario); Tampa, and Lakeland, FL.
NFS went from a small basic FBO to a broad Aviation Service provider serving a global clientele recognized for its technical expertise, safety, and customer support.
In 2018 Tom sold NFS, ensuring the importance of NFS holding highly skilled technical expertise recruiting and developing high-performing personnel, strong safety culture, values, customer support, and commitment to excellence aligned with NFS organizational goals contributing to NFS business success. With over 64 years in business National Flight continues to operate as a leading provider of excellence in aviation services.
Tom lived a life defined by kindness, resilience, and his deep passion for the Aviation Industry. He was a pilot, flight instructor, a history enthusiast, a patriot, and entrepreneur willing to take personal financial risks developing services in the Aviation industry.
He thoroughly loved and cherished his family, valued his friends, and cared a great deal for his co-workers. He had a lighthearted, warm and friendly sense of humor, finding joy and levity in everyday moments with a trait for building rapport, reducing tension, making others laugh, and creating a positive atmosphere. He was a reservoir of knowledge and armed with an arsenal of jokes and stories he found remarkable or humorous.
He held a strong sense for patriotism, feeling the full depth of the lyrics in patriotic songs that reminds all Americans the reasons for our beloved country and the common thread "In God We Trust." He believed that integrity wasn't something you talked about — it was something you lived by every single day, and hard work is not a burden, but a privilege.
Tom's legacy isn't just in the stories we tell about him — it's in the way we live our own lives. Every time we choose honesty over convenience, honor over personal gain, integrity over image, kindness over indifference, faith over despair, and courage over fear, we carry him forward.
We say goodbye to a husband, father, grandfather, a friend, and co-worker, whose life was full of "adventure."
He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Pamela DeWitt Wiles; his children, Audra Carey Wiles, Tierney Jaine Wiles; and cherished granddaughter, Elowen Townes Tierra; and brother, Daniel G. Wiles.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Arthur Wiles; his parents, Arthur W. and Rosaleen M. Wiles; brother, Fr. Arthur W. Wiles Jr.; brother, James M. Wiles; and brother, Robert (Bobby) Wiles; aunt, Col. Margaret Morgan.
Funeral Mass for Tom will be offered on Thursday, July 2nd, at 10:00 a.m., at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church, located at 398 County Road 513, Califon, New Jersey 07830. Interment will follow at the Lower Valley Cemetery in Califon. Arrangements are under the care of Martin Funeral Home, Clinton, NJ. To share memories with the family, please visit www.martinfh.com
